Does Toby have any occupation in particular?

Toby of the Dinner Crew works for pay as a demolitionist. He also has a side job as a percussionist in a symphony, as he’s pretty good at keeping a beat. He actually wanted to learn to play the flute but never quite got the hang of it for some reason.

Toby Pines is, at least at one time, an assistant at the Grenda von Fundhauser Wildlife Reserve. He rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured wildlife in the area of Gravity Falls, plus the occasional stray. Volunteered there for years as a teen and young adult before getting certification for the job and being picked up as a paid employee.

headcanon that Alcor keeps watching over reincarnated versions of Bill, waiting for some proof that he is actually the same evil being, but he eventually gives up. Sure, some reincarnations did bad things, but none of them as evil as Bill Cipher was.

That whole thing with Ian really worried him, and the fact that these reincarnations so often seem to wind up around reincarnations of his loved ones just tends to feed into those concerns.

He does learn to…well, live with it, for lack of a better phrase.

you know, i bet if toby had somehow come before bill, dipper’s view of bill would be biased for the better. it’s just because he met bill first. same with mabel and the others, really. he’s kind of a sucker for first impressions.

Oh, he very much is. He can grow past them, but they do tend to stick, especially if they’re reinforced later on in some way or another (i.e. Bill attempting to resurrect through Ian, using Ian’s blanket humanity as a way to get close enough to strike Dipper where it would hurt). In a way, it’s another example of how human he is: once bitten, twice shy, and the negative tends to make a greater impact on the mind than the positive.

HC: When the reincarnations of Bill stop losing their eye it means that they have made up for Bill’s sins.

If the defining characteristic of the Universe, as such, in TAU was a sense of Justice or Karma, then yes, this may be. The thing is, the Universe – or Chance, or Coincidence, or whatever you want to call it – really does not care about “good” or “bad,” especially not the way humans view these things. Stuff simply happens, and that is that.

So Bill reincarnations don’t always lose an eye (and there isn’t really a pattern to this, diminishing or otherwise), and the ones that do aren’t really paying for anything. It’s just one of those things that sometimes tend to happen for no real reason.

I was thinking, since it’s been mentioned that it’s incredibly rare for new demons to come into existence, would a possible reason that Bill reincarnated as a human was simply because there weren’t any new demons to reincarnate into by the time he had to rejoin the reincarnation cycle?

Technically he didn’t have to rejoin once his soul reformed – there’s nothing that forces souls into rebirth – but it’s possible that the rarity of a demon birth may have factored into the plans he chose to make. Ultimately he was after the kind of power that Alcor achieved as a human turned demon, power that could grow greater in time than a demon born as such, and so he sought to re-create that.

For the person asking about Trans characters in the Transendence AU:

Off the top of my head we have:

http://transcendence-au.tumblr.com/post/131917689358/nemesis

– fic featuring a Bill reincarnation that uses it pronouns

http://transcendence-au.tumblr.com/tagged/jeremiah

– Jeremiah is a trans man who has some stuff written about him

http://archiveofourown.org/series/278475

– The Bentley fics do a great job of portraying a future where people are respectful of gender. Asking for pronouns happens frequently and anyone could be trans. There is also a nonbinary character.

And in an act of shameless self promotion:

– A Better Birthright is a story about taking over / healing the post-apocalyptic world featuring transwoman Mizar and numerous trans and non-binary background characters.

Would Toby, as a residual effect of Bill’s influence on him, sort of subconsciously do some of the weird physical stuff Bipper did (like having his arms at weird right angles at all times, or defaulting to having his hands on his hips constantly, and just little stuff like that)? Like, people would just write it off as “oh, Toby’s clumsy as shit” but it’d be a reminder to Dipper that, as much as we all might not like it, Bill is a part of Toby.

Toby tends to keep his arms in close and closed. His body language typically reads “small, background, don’t notice me,” and that’s a subconscious mindset far, far stronger than any residual Bill-ness. Hands on hips (or held bizarrely akimbo) isn’t going to be a pose Toby takes frequently, and never without some sort of conscious intent.

Honestly, his golden coloring and single eye – pure coincidence that these are – can be physical reminders enough. Dipper is hit frequently enough as it is with the memory that, oh yeah, he hated that one preincarnation of this kid, and that’s without loads of obvious, odd little ticks of personality bleeding over.
