So I have to apologise for the unannounced, unexpected month-and-a-half hiatus. I found out by trial and error (mostly error) that I can’t consistently update two longfics while also consistently working on a novel. I’m going to finish this and Imbalance, but after that, I’m planning to take a step back from fic to focus more on my original fiction. I hope you’ll check out @katesummervsthemultiverse if you’re interested in what I’ve been getting up to!

The first thing that caught the eye, entering Gravity Falls, were the cliffs.
It had been true in 2012 and it was true now, a little over a thousand years later. The valley in which the town nestled sloped gently downwards, only to abruptly terminate in a towering wall of rock. The cliffs loomed over the valley like enormous sentinels, keeping watch over everything that lay before them. One of the huge outcroppings of bare stone that hung over the valley had lost its top, a chunk of rock almost the size of the town itself sliding off and crashing into the base of the opposite cliff, but the distinctive UFO shape could still be made out, if you knew what you were looking for.
Gravity Falls had changed too much, and not at all.

Are there any TAU fics featuring a trans character?

When Ian woke up, the other side of the bed was empty.
The covers were all rumpled and pushed down to the foot of the bed, the blue light on the coffeemaker was on, and the window was forced wider than it had been last night, wide enough to blow the curtains out into the room like a couple of very ugly snot-green-damask ghosts. Somehow, it was still unbearably hot in the room.
Ian patted the mattress beside him, but it was only about as warm as the rest of the room. He couldn’t tell how long Mira must have been up before he was.

“This is gonna cost you more than just one bag of candy-coated chocolate-covered peanuts, you know.”
“Mmhm,” Mira agreed, barely listening. She’d lived in the Pacific Northwest her whole life, only a few hundred miles from the place where she was standing. Heck, she remembered family vacations in the Redwood National Forest, in the eerie underwater hush of a forest as old as the world. But somehow, nothing had prepared her for Gravity Falls.
Speaking of Reincarnation Blues, it just recently occurred to me why Sun-mi dislikes Ian so much. I mean, I’d caught on immediately that she was a Ford reincarnation, but I hadn’t connected it to her dislike of Ian until a month ago or so. Of course R!Ford wouldn’t trust a R!Bill!
😀
Do you know more characters’ daemons for RB (especially Mira and Rosa)? What about other stories or fandoms? Any thoughts you’d like to share about daemons in general?
Man, I love the idea of expressing a character’s personality through association with an animal, and I love the things you can do with an associated animal that’s also that character’s soul, but I definitely feel some sort of way about daemons settling, and it’s occurring to me just now that I also feel some sort of way about the idea that settled adults can safely be severed from their daemons with no ill effects save for docility and compliance, while it literally kills children. You are not nearly so subtle as I thought you at age twelve, Mr. Pullman. (Then again, at age twelve, I completely failed to recognise any sort of religious allegory in the Chronicles of Narnia, so maybe I was just a particularly obtuse little kid.)
Rosa’s daemon is a satinette pigeon named Queenie. Sun-mi’s is a magpie that she calls Hildegard, mostly because she can. She has another name, but Sun-mi doesn’t like to share it. (When she was born, they thought she was one of those rare people whose daemon was the same sex as they were. They were right, but not in the way they expected.)
Mira’s daemon, to her endless amusement and frustration, is a rabbit – but not just any rabbit, one of those enormous rabbits that weighs as much as a person. She calls him Flopsy.
Bob’s real name is Metallah. Ian used to not use it because it was a mouthful and he likes to tease her (as she likes to tease him right back). Now, he doesn’t use it because of Connotations. And because it’s a mouthful. Besides, Bob is just such a Bob.
Alcor doesn’t have one.
It occurs to me that I had three out of four of these people rename their own daemons (and Rosa’s is debatable).
I stand by that, I think, especially for RB. If anyone is going to name your literal soul, it should be you.
Every time I write dialogue for Sun-mi i’m imagining it in basically Aubrey Plaza’s voice.
What happens to Sun-Mi? She’s my favourite.
She wins a journalism award at twenty-three for her exposé of the atrocities going on underground at the former Edwards Air Force Base. She graduates top of her class with a double degree in sociology and investigative journalism, and goes on to write a series of pieces exposing anti-supernatural sentiment in New California and across the continental United States, and how the legacy of the pro-nat movement of the early 2000s still affects people in even the most supernatural-welcoming areas of the country. It sweeps every award it’s eligible for and lands her a grant to produce a documentary on supernatural rights worldwide. She spends the next thirty years of her life traveling the globe, interviewing people, learning about various cultures and making new friends, and totally not avoiding her friend Mira’s creepy husband.

Part One / Part Two / Part Three / Part Four / Part Five / Part Six / Part Seven / Part Eight / Part Nine / Part Ten / Part Eleven / Part Twelve / Part Thirteen / Part Fourteen / Part Fifteen / Epilogue
Last chapter! There’s only a short epilogue remaining after this (and possibly a highlight reel from Santa Grenda ComicCon, but that’s a story for later)! I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who read, who left such thoughtful comments and encouragements, who made art or wrote fic(!!!!! seriously this is probably the first time I’ve received fic of my fic in this fandom and it’s such a thrill!), and an especially huge thank you to seiya234 for being my creative consultant, fact-checker, resource on anxiety, and beta reader (and Twin Peaks reference authority)!
Warning for mentions of eye trauma and cartoon ponies.

“Then we have a deal.”
Alcor’s grasp is firm, almost clutching, and the blue fire burns, and the forest outside with all of its eyes is burning, burning –
what are your OCs’ morning routines like?
I have many. Beware.
– Belle spends an hour in the bathroom and then comes out looking almost exactly the same as she did when she went in, except maybe with some searingly bright eyeshadow on and a scrunchie in her hair. She spends most of that time lip-synching to old pop songs in the mirror.
– Onika spends an hour in the bathroom but every second of that time is used strategically in deploying a beauty routine that shows exactly the kind of meticulous thought and planning and steady hand that has also made her a fearsome competitor on the international amateur combat-robotics circuit.
– Lionel showers in five minutes and makes a half-hearted attempt to clean his glasses.
– Mike spends half an hour trying to put on his leg without making something explode.
– Alice spends all her time trying to pick out an outfit and then slaps on some mascara and runs out the door with a piece of toast in her mouth.
– Mira takes fifteen minutes to wash her face, brush her teeth, put on makeup and choose an outfit, and then spends twenty minutes trying to decide which contacts to wear and trying to put on false lashes without stabbing herself in the eye.
– Sun-mi spends an hour contouring and highlighting and then goes ‘fuck it’ and throws on a giant scarf and a beanie and big coat because fashion? Annoying body-form underthings? Those are for days when she doesn’t have Serious Work to do. And you never know when you’re going to have to run away from security guards or climb an electric fence in this business. Can’t have your movement restricted by the modern-day equivalent of corsetry and garters.
– Rosa carefully selects one of the eight thousand red lipsticks from her collection and wastes fifteen minutes making kissy faces in the mirror. The poor person fixing her hair for the day has to try to manouever around her primping and posing, and it does not help that Rosa literally always ends up taking over hair duty herself because none of these people can get it just right.
– Ian realises that the sun is coming up for the second time in a day, thinks about going to bed for about half a second, and decides against it.
