I just left my husband alone with our two children for sixteen days. I was not worried about anything regarding the house, their food, or their wellbeing. I put all the appointments in the family calendar and my husband checked it and kept them. I literally did not worry about them. I missed them, and I was sad that they missed me, but I didn’t worry about them AT ALL. I need to impress upon you all that I missed their company, but was not worried for their welfare.

I also did no meal prep. I don’t even think I went shopping right before I left.

This is not about apples and oranges. This isn’t even about my husband. This is about the fact that this is apparently WEIRD.

Another mum at my daughter’s school is leaving for ten days. She’s taking her youngest (who is a very small baby) and leaving her husband with their two girls. She has been cooking for days preparing freezer meals. She’s panicking and deputizing her six year old to remind him how to make school lunches. AND I AM APPALLED.

A) He is definitely not helpless. (He’s a doctor or something.) What gendered bullshit. B) THAT LITTLE GIRL IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HER AND HER SISTER’S WELLBEING. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. C) Why is she married to this person and creating children with him if he’s this big of an idiot?

While she was laughingly recounting this, the other mums were nodding and smiling sympathetically, like oh yes, I too have my caveman at home!! Such managing required! I was the only one who was like “Dude, he’ll be fine. Literally. He will be fine.” I said it a lot. She was not convinced. She kept bringing up her older daughter. She’ll be like a little mum!

NO.

NO NO NO NO.

NO.

Straight women, don’t do this shit. It’s gross. Don’t infantilize your husbands and then expect your daughters to pick up the slack. So fucking gross. So. So. GROSS.

The fact that so many adults think a six year old girl is more capable of learning and performing basic domestic tasks than a grown-ass man says it all, really.

Also, saying things like “She’ll be like a little mum!” enforces the stereotype that girls are “more mature” than boys of the same age, and allows boys to get away with their terrible behavior while we FORCE girls to mature earlier by impressing upon them these responsibilities and then look back and say how boys and girls are “naturally” different. ALSO, the whole girls are more mature for their age than boys is what some statutory rapists/apologists use to justify their crimes. It’s these seemingly subtle comments that perpetuate damaging societal mentalities.

My mom has always gotten a lot of grief from her family for working so much and “leaving us to fend for ourselves”

Just last weekend she was out in Pittsburgh for the wedding of some cousin and despite the fact that, 1) she’s been traveling for work for almost a decade (often overseas) 2) my siblings and I are all over the age of 15 and 3) my dad is a responsible father and an independent adult who can tie his own shoes and parent his children, her family was still /shocked/ that she would leave my dad “all alone with the kids” for THREE DAYS

Then they found out that I, the 20 year old, am home and they all relaxed like I’m supposed to be The Head Adult here
Like? No???
No.
First of all I’m working. And secondly this isn’t my house to run? And my dad isn’t a child who can’t take care of his own house and kids?

Please people do not support this mentality that men are babies who can’t do anything including take care of their own children

They’re better than that and so are you.

My plan to create a perfectly flat and level Kansas by moving 5,501 cubic miles of earth from west to east. It’s the ideal Kansas. Still some details to work out about rivers, roads, etc. Watch out for the 900-foot cliff bisecting Kansas City.

this is honestly the best post on the entire fucking internet

level everyone in kansas too. none of us want to be here. end our suffering

Why You Should Actually Be Terrified Right Now

raedusoleil:

It’s what happened to Jews in Germany in 1938 when their passports were declared invalid. That is what is beginning to happen here, now, to Hispanic citizens along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Oh, is it bad to compare the GOP to Nazis? Well, if members of the GOP do not like being compared to Nazis, they should consider not behaving exactly like Nazis.

Hispanic U.S. citizens, some of whom were in the U.S. military, are not being allowed to renew their passports. This is reportedly happening to “hundreds, even thousands” of Latinos, according to a report in the Washington Post. They’re getting letters from the State Department saying it does not believe they are citizens. The government claims their citizenships are fraudulent. “I’ve had probably 20 people who have been sent to the detention center—U.S. citizens,” Jaime Diez, an attorney in Brownsville, told The Washington Post.

The Washington Post also reports on ICE officials coming to citizens’ homes and taking their passports away. This is an escalation from a few months ago, when Americans were detained by ICE officials just for speaking Spanish to one another.

The administration is currently launching an effort to take citizenship from people who they suspect of fraud in obtaining it. Fraud in these cases is exceedingly rare. The last time the government tried to strip people of their citizenship was, according to Columbia Professor Mae Ngai, during The Red Scare of the 1950s. As Ngai remarks, McCarthyism is not typically remembered as a good period in American history.

There is good reason to believe that this could portend still worse things to come for the U.S. Hispanic population, unless people begin to speak out loudly, and fast.

anytime America wants to erupt into flames via angry mobs and run to DC with pitchforks, that’d be nice

I planted some saguaro seeds about a week ago. Who woukda thunk that such large lads start out so smol. (submitted @nolayelde)

this speaks for itself when paired with a pic of the grown plant for scale:

they usually live to be 150+ years old. cutting one down in Arizona, where they’re native, is a felony with a maximum 9 months in prison.

in my brief wikipedia exploration to find out how old they could be for this ask i found out that there was a dude in 1982 who was vandalizing one (which is also highly illegal) by shooting at it and then poking at it, and not only did the 500 pound arm of the cactus he was shooting at fall on top of him, but the actual trunk of the cactus then also proceeded to fall on him. he died. smited by the cactus gods for his transgressions

There was one we had in our backyard that fell on our fence and buckled the steel bar. When the guy came by to take it away he sliced into roughly foot long segments and we kept one. It was really cool in the inside, also the chlorophyll is on the inside. My mom turned the outer layer into a lampshade

Sorry it’s dusty lmao no idea how to clean it

i…………..idk how to react to this but this is definitely an item i wasn’t expecting

here’s another fun fact about saguaro cactuses (or cacti – both are fine!): when they die, the flesh on them erodes away and leaves these really cool wood-like structures

they’re called bones. these are cactus bones

……oh

@bunjywunjy this is some weird biology if i ever saw some

botany really isn’t my thing but holy fuck that’s

weird as shit

This is from the forecast discussion of Major Hurricane Florence from this afternoon. As a meteorologist, when I saw this, my heart sank. They don’t use wording like this for every storm.

Florence is going to be a devastating. There will be huge amounts of flooding, both from inland rain and from costal storm surge. Winds are going to be some of the strongest you can get from a hurricane. People within the path of this storm could lose everything.

If you know anyone who lives on the North or South Carolina coast, tell them that if there’s an evacuation ordered, they need to get the hell out. Do not take chances with this one.

Reblogging again to add a list of things/essentials from a friend who lives on the NC coast and has weathered hurricanes and other bad weather:

– toiletries (paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes for “bathing” in case power & water go out)

– water, 1 gallon per person for at least 7 days (err on the side of caution if possible); more if you have animals!!

– non perishable food items, if you get canned food make sure you have a can OPENER

– pet food & supplies, if you’re really worried about flooding it may be beneficial to get life vests for your pets, also find a way to put identification information on them!

– batteries

– flashlights

– battery packs for cell phones charged up in case of loss of power

– filled cars with gas & filled gas can(s)

– get all essentials like passports, important docs, and cherished items together & ready to go

– just in case, determine a way to get onto your roof safely

– fill bathtubs with water so if water isn’t available you can refill the toilets to keep flushing and keep waste to a minimum

– if you have dogs look up how to make a makeshift potty, you can use a hard baby pool and some sod potentially

– check your prescriptions and get them refilled now if necessary

– if you’re taking insulin and lose power, fill a separate cooler for your insulin than the one you would use for food. Insulin > food

If your place begins to flood get the hell OUT of the water!!! There is no telling if you have a live electrical charge in there!

Do not cross any water you cannot see the bottom of the ground in. I’m serious.

Read up on flash floods and common safety tips.
